Renaissance
The Renaissance was a time when humanity began to rise from the intellectual decline of the Middle Ages. During this time, scholars began to look to the ideals of the ancient philosophers of the classical world, a time of high standards and of human achievement. During this Renaissance, or “Rebirth,” there were many historical, theoretical and artistic issues that informed and shaped the aesthetic attitudes in Italian and Northern European art. The interest in the ancient philosophy sprung the notion of Humanism, which is thought to have brought back the ideas of classical antiquity (learning and literature) that had been lost in the Middle Ages. Antiquity, not a Christian notion, was a very sensuous ideal that embraced sexuality and was about the human body. The idea of grazia, (a beautiful movement) was also developed during this time, and used primarily in religious paintings and sculpture, portraying what was thought to be a beautiful a serpentine or S shaped line. Grazia was primarily a Neo-Platonist idea, Neo-Platonism being based on the philosophies of Plato whom thought man should “Un-forget,” we were one with god. Also, Plato taught that beauty was the desire for love, and jointly, God was reflected in beauty. Grazia however, did not have a unified meaning to the artists of the High Renaissance. To Leonardo, for instance, grazia was not Neo-platonic and had more to do with the inner life of the object being depicted. For Michelangelo, grazia was certainly a Neo-Platonist idea, since it dealt with an “Accent,” to god.
