Lord Of The Flies Quotes
He was old enough, twelve years and a few months, to have lost the prominent tummy of childhood and not yet old enough for adolescence to have made him awkward.(Chpt 1 pg. 10) The description of Ralph shows that he is not a young child anymore and is in the process of changing, from childhood to adolescence. He’s a commander in the Navy. When he gets leave he’ll come and rescue us. (Chpt 1 pg. 13) Ralph’s statement about his father demonstrates that toward the beginning of the saga he is naïve and presumes all is well and that the grownups can fix anything. Ralph pursed his lips and squirted air into the shell, which emitted a low, farting noise. Then at the apex, the grass was thick again because no one was there.” (Chpt 5 pg.77) Each trunk in this quote stands for the separate groups that have formed over the days on the island. Golding is using a metaphor to state that the island is leaderless and separated. (Chpt 3 pg. 53) This quote shows that Jack ‘s mind is slowly deteriorating into a primal form. His urgency to hunt surpasses his desire to be rescued, demonstrating a defect of human nature, the quickness to revert to savagery. (Chpt 5 pg. 94) Once again Golding presents the idea that if a grownup were there the problem would be solved in a matter of minutes. The children’s idea of grownups as a superior race is used as an excuse to entwine themselves in the play of casual life and not worry about responsibility. “What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages? What’s grownups going to think? Going off – hunting pigs – letting fires out – and now!”
