At the beginning of the play, Macbeth does indeed have the ambition to kill King Duncan. Even Lady Macbeth knows he could, but she also knows that he wouldn’t without a bit of encouragement. She says, “The illness should attend it: what thou woulds’t highly.” So, in a way, Lady Macbeth somewhat brainwashes her husband into killing the king by subtly taunting his masculinity, like when she says, “what beast was’t then, That made you break this enterprise to me? When you durst do it, then you were a man, And, to be more that what you were, you would Be so much more a man.” Lady Macbeth would have even killed King Duncan herself, except she claims that

After Macbeth’s first murder, he gets very angry when he hears the 3 witches prophecy that Banquo is going to be the father of kings, when they pronounce, “Lesser than Macbeth, and greater… Not so happy, yet much happier. Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none: So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo!” Macbeth had been corrupted. “For them the gracious Duncan have I murdered, put rancours in the vessel of my peace,” Macbeth states as he feels he has done all of that for them. The speech shows us that Macbeth is angry that with Banquo and he is justifying the murder that is about to be committed.

To summarize, I think that it was mostly Lady Macbeth’s fault that Macbeth went out and murdered so many people. After all, even though Banquo was Macbeth’s second murder, and Lady Macbeth was not involved with the planning of the whole thing, she did provoke him in the first place. If she didn’t convince him that he could become king once he got the right people out of the way, he never would have commit murder to begin with.
