The Godfather Movie Vs. Book
Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola Vito Corleone, The Don Marlon Brando Santino “Sonny” Corleone, middle son of Vito James Caan Michael Corleone, Youngest son of Vito Corleone Al Pacino Tom Hagen, Consigliere and “adopted’ son of Vito Robert Duvall Fredo “freddy” Corleone, Eldest Son of Vito Kay Adams, Wife of Micahel Corleone Diane Keaton Connie Corleone, Daughter of Don Vito, Wife of Carlo Talia Shire Carlo Rizzi, Husband of Connie Gianni Russo A son is forced into his Mafia father’s business, much against his will, only to become the head of his the family when his father, the Don, dies. Having been born as an American child in the 1970’s, I have obviously grown up with the legend of The Godfather series, and have viewed the movies, all three, too many times to count. I was always drawn into the world of mafia madness. The Godfather was held as the epitome of all mafia and gangster movi
Both the movie and the book depict Michael’s rise into the Don position the same way. Vito Corleone dies and Michael is left as the successor to the position as head of family. He begin his revenge on the other families and in one day, he literally takes out all of his father’s enemies. In the first part of the movie, it is seen that Connie’s husband, Carlo beats Connie. Her eldest brother, Sonny becomes aware of this fact and goes after her husband and gives him the beating of a lifetime. Before this scene, the Don has been shot, almost to his death and lies in his hospital bed, barely clinging to life. He has been shot by an allegiance of Sollozzo, a man who wants the families to enter into the drug business, yet the Don refrained, because he is of “old school” values. Sollozzo fearing that the Don being against his idea of partaking on the new wave of drugs, decides to assassinate the Don, hoping to build allegiances with the other families. Mysteriously, one night, Connie calls her brother Sonny, the new head of the Family when the Don is hospitalized, and tells her husband that Carlo has beat her. The movie shows later that Sonny leaves the family mall, and races to Connie’s aid. Upon traveling to Connie’s side in the city, Sonny must hit the causeway from Long Island and is taken out by a group of thugs. The book explains that Carlo was hoping to join forces with the other families and gain a higher rank than that which he has been offered with the Corleone family, so he “lightly” beats up Connie, knowing she would call Sonny to come to her, and sets Sonny up to be taken out b y the opposing side, thus, enabling him to a greater position with another family. This was not understood until I had read the book. es. However, no matter how many times I viewed the movies, parts of the movie (The Godfather I) were were always somewhat hazy and fuzzy to me until I read the book. In the book, as well as in the movie, before Michael begins his vendetta on the other families, he tells his sisters husband, Carlo, a native of Nevada, that when the family moves to Nevada, he will be Michael’s right hand man. Carlo was essentially the cause in the killing Sonny Corleone, something Michael never forgot. When Michael lights the fuse of his massive vendetta bomb, he also repays the favor of his brother’s death to Carlo.
