First of all, Mme Lantin’s mother is a perfect example of Maupassant’s view on the bourgeoisie. “She was the daughter of a country tutor”, which was had a low social status attached to it, and her mother “who made regular visits to several bourgeois families of the neighborhood, in hopes of being able to get her daughter married.” (Norton Intro to Literature, “The Jewelry” page 14) Mme Lantin’s mother wanted her to marry into a bourgeois family to move up a class, and therefore in wealth. It didn’t matter whether her daughter was in love with someone, the sole criteria as for her daughter’s husband in her mother’s eyes was wealth and prestige. This is the first case where Maupassant demonstrates the how naïve the bourgeois’ lust for wealth. This desire for riches was passed on to her daughter, Mme Lantin. At first she was satisfied with her husband and her new rise in status and wealth, but as in human nature and capitalist nature
