The Life And Teachings Of The Twelve Apostles

The life of Jesus Christ, although very short, was full of teachings and miracles that were done for the fulfillment of God’s Word. Christ’s journey took him to many various places where he encountered a great multitude of differing beliefs, of which allowed him to use his extensive talents as a teacher, and speaker to win over the souls of his followers for God. Christ knew he would not live on this earth forever, and needed help in spreading the Gospel to the people. He chose twelve helpers, called Apostles, to aid him in his journey and teachings. The twelve chosen were from varying backgrounds, with very different personalities. Several felt that they were not worthy to be called a Disciple of Christ, but they held their trust in Christ, and knew that there was a reason for them being chosen, and joined in the task of teaching the Word of God. The twelve chosen were Andrew, Simon Peter, James Zebedee, John Zebedee, Philip, Nathaniel, Matthew Levi, Thomas Didymus, James Alpheus, Judas Alpheus, Simon, and Judas Iscariot. Their lives were to be forever changed from their work with Christ, a change that would not only benefit themselves, but also the people of the world, for all times to come. The lives of the apostles were uncommon indeed. “The Apostles of Christ, imbued with The Comforter, or Spirit of Truth had the courage to live their testimonies, giving every last ounce of energy, and eventually, even their own blood for the truth”(Martin-Buhler, 2). I feel that not many today would be able to do the things these men did, with such conviction, and give their lives for the cause. They went through many hardships, and learned much wisdom on their journeys. “They were training in the personality of Jesus” (Mastrantonis, 1996, 6). This training brought them to all many different areas and in contact with many different people, with very different personalities. Their lives represent a true testament to the life of Christ and his teachings. May the Word of God continue to touch all the lives it comes in contact with.

James Zebedee was the older of the two Zebedee brothers. Jesus called James and his brother John the “Sons of Thunder” in Mark 3:17. James was 30 when he received the call to be an apostle, and had four children, who were living near Capernaum. James’ profession at the time of his calling was a fisherman.

Simon lived to be an old man and preached everywhere he could. He died in Africa after teaching and preaching to the people there.

John was a very strong and dependable person. John appreciated the Master’s love and unselfishness. These traits of Jesus made a lasting impression on the future of John. After the death of James, John married the brother’s widow.
