The Life Of Jesuse Of Nazareth
Jesus Christ was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea, in a small, overcrowded stable. Jesus was born to a virgin woman by the name of Mary and a Nazarene carpenter by the name of Joseph. Joseph and Mary had traveled to Bethlehem on horseback because “Caesar Augustus decreed that all inhabitants of the Roman Empire should be numbered, that a census should be made which could be used for effecting better taxation.” (The Mortal Career 122:7.1) All of the inns were full due to Caesar Augustus’s decree and Mary and Joseph were forced to stay in a stable that had been cleared of the animals to compensate for the overcrowding of the inns. A little more than twenty-four hours later, Mary had given birth to her baby, for whom she gave the name Jesus. In the days following Jesus’ birth, Joseph enrolled and met up with a man that he had talked with in Jericho two nights before. The man took Joseph to a friend who had a room at the inn. The man exchanged rooms with Mary and Joseph and in the afternoon Mary and Joseph moved what they had brought into the inn. They lived in the in for more than three weeks before moving to the home of one of Joseph’s relatives. (The Mortal Career 122:7.1-122:9.1)
Much of Jesus’ life between the ages of twelve and eighteen are not well known. These years mainly consisted of Jesus’ travels and his education in his faith. The public ministry of Jesus Christ began after John the Baptist’s imprisonment. This included Jesus being baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist, his forty-day period of fasting and meditation, and the temptations of Jesus by Satan. After his baptism and his soul-searching excursion into the wilderness, Jesus went back to Galilee to visit his home, however, Jesus’ fellow fellow countrymen shunned him and his teachings. This forced Jesus to move to Capernaum to set up his ministry there. In Capernaum Jesus called his first disciples, Simon who is called Peter, Peter’s brother Andrew, James the son of Zebedee, and James’s brother John. Jesus’ closest followers, or disciples, grew to a total of twelve. “Using Capernaum as his base, Jesus, with his twelve disciples, traveled to close towns and villages proclaiming the advent of the kingdom of God, as many Hebrew prophets had before him.” (Jesus Christ, Funk & Wagnall vol 15 38) Jesus focused on the endless love of God for even the worst human beings and he promised forgiveness and everlasting live in heaven to even the worst sinners if they repented. Any wounded or weak who ask for Jesus’ help was healed with the power of faith through God. “The essence of Jesus’ teachings is heard in the Sermon on the Mount, which contained the Beatitudes and the Lord’s Prayer.” (Jesus Christ, Funk & Wagnall vol 15 38) Jesus focused on “moral sincerity over strict adherence to Jewish ritual.” (Jesus Christ, Funk & Wagnall vol 15 38) This resulted in a rise of people who opposed Jesus and his teachings because they thought that it would lead to the “disregarding the Torah or prejudices against Roman authorities.” (Jesus Christ, Funk & Wagnall vol 15 38) Jesus traveled between the cities on the inside and the outside of Galilee and between “periods of instruction and periods of retirement to Bethany and Ephraim.” (Jesus Christ, Funk & Wagnall vol 15 38) During his travels, Jesus performed many miracles, and the seemingly most miraculous was resurrecting a dead man by the name of Lazarus while in Bethany. This was miraculous to his followers, but to Jesus, the most important event during his public ministry was when Simon Peter realized that Jesus was the Messiah. After Peter’s realization Jesus envisioned his death and resurrection and his transfiguration. After his revelation, Jesus and his disciples traveled to Jerusalem for t
