The Life Of Richard The Lion-Hearted

Richard Plantagent was revered as one of the great warrior kings of England. His reign was from 1189-1199. He spent a total of 6 months in England and, because, of this he became also known as “the absent king.” Richard was also known for his bravery which he earned his nickname “The Lionhearted.” Richard Plantagent was born on September 8th in the year 1157 C.E in Oxfordshire, England. He had four brothers and three sisters, the first of whom died at a young age. Of the remainder; Prince Henry was named heir to the English throne, Richard was to inherit his mother’s Aquintain, which is part of Southern France, and where Richard lived as a child. His brother Prince Geoffrey was also to inherit land, but John inherited nothing from his father King Henry I and for this they named him John Lackland.

Furthermore, Richard’s native language was not English, but French since he live in France the majority of his youth. In 1172, at the age of fourteen, Richard was named the Duke of Aquitain in the church of St. Hillaire at Poitiers. Richard also learned not only to speak and write Poitevin French, but he also learned to appreciate and to imitate the poetry and music which was popular at court. Richard’s received much o

Richard meanwhile was doing quite well with his own army capturing seven castles and taking the county of Toulouse. But on July 11, 1188 A.D, Henry II with his army landed in Normandy and on August 30, 1188 A.D he invaded the French kingdom. King Phillip now felt the brunt of a two-pronged attack with the combination of Welsh and English troops. Furthermore, Richard decided to end his focus on his own war which threatened Phillip’s armies from the south and, after three days of fighting, Phillip had seen enough and proposed a peace conference. Richard made a public offer of his fealty to Phillip and a cease-fire was to last until St. Hilary’s Day, which was on January 13, 1189 A.D. On May 28, 1189 A.D, Richard and Phillip demanded Henry II to allow Princess Alice to marry Richard. Henry not only refused but gave the right to John to marry Alice and to take Richard’s land and hostilities erupted immediately.(Gillingham,147)

On June 5, 1191, Richard arrived at Acre only to fall ill a few days later. The disease which not only Richard got, but also Phillip Augustus, was called“Arnaldia”(Gillingham,118).

Richard heard that his father took ill and was on his death bed. He went to his side and Henry and Richard embraced and reconciled with each other. Yet, on the way out, Richard heard is father muttering these words “God grant I die not before I have worthily revenged myself on you!” ( Brundage, 56). On July 6, 1189 A.D, King Henry II died alone in his bed. Richard was accused of being his father murderer at his father’s funeral at the Westminster Abbey church in London.

After the burial of his father King Henry II was completed, Richard was crowned King on Sunday September 3, 1189 at Westminster Abbey. Richard did do something though out of the ordinary, he banned women and Jews from his coronation. This is probably the best supporting evidence of him being a homosexual, because for the fact that he was known to choose men over women for his sexual partner’s. Although, the tradition was that women were banned from all coronation ceremonies. The exclusion of the Jews that bore gifts for the king had more severe consequences, which led to days of riots in front of the castle. Richard got down to business soon after his coronation to continue to raise money for his commitment to depart on the crusade. He decided to sell the offices of the kingdom to solve his financial problems. Richard at the same time was being overly generous to his younger brother John, by giving him several lands, though Richard’s intent was for John to never return to England.(Appleby,120)
