Thom has such a huge decision to make, and only a mere moment to decide on what he will do. Even though, the parents of this little girl are nowhere in this story, except for a small sentence including them, Thom still had to think about them as well. The grandfather killed the granddaughter, but the parents just lost their child. They lost the one thing more precious to them than anything money could ever buy. They lost a child that had their own blood running through her veins, a child that would grow up in their own image, and would one day possibly have a child of her own. Thom would, in one fail swoop, destroy any last strand of sanity that the parents have left in them, if they saw the picture of their daughter printed on newspapers and magazines being sold for a profit.

Thom is right in the belief that an award-winning photograph is not something that you jeopardize your morals, ethics, or self-respect, even for a once in a lifetime opportunity. Thom knows that this picture would be the best of the best. Thom can see the joy on the faces of his executives, and the awards that would be engraved with his name. If pictures are worth a thousand words, then his ?perfect picture? will be worth a million, and yet Thom finally decides there is still no way to justify this intrusion of private family affairs. Thom shows courage in his decision and great confidence in his ability as a reporter. He may have doubted himself in making the decision at the beginning, but he knows in the long-term, that he made the right decision.
