In the beginning Sonny Just wanted to find a group of guys who liked to ride motorcycles and would come together at the first sign of trouble, much like a family would. Finding new recruits to put through this process was a long and toilsome task. Recruits had to undergo a long period of evaluation to prove that they would never let their brothers down and always support the club, no matter what (Walter Kern 1).

Along the way the Hell’s Angels found themselves in direct opposition with the law, and always for a variety of reasons. The ties of brotherhood were strong though, should any Hell’s Angels member have a run-in with the law, all of the present Angel

California is still the holy land to all Hell’s Angels members, but like any good club they’ve expanded. They now have about 2,100 members in about 193 chapters worldwide. Some chapters are in South Africa, Belgium, and Canada. In fact a 2002 report from Canada’s Criminal Intelligence Service stated that the Hell’s Angels “persist as the largest and most criminally active outlaw motorcycle gang in the country (January Maxim, 92).” Their quests have even taken them to Scandinavia, and lead Denmark to enforce “Rocker Laws” (January Maxim, 92) that prohibit the public gathering of groups like the Hell’s Angels.

The Hell’s Angels are a band of brothers that will do anything for each other, even kill. A willingness to stick together like this can come in handy sometimes. But they don’t like to talk much about what goes on inside their ring of fire, and they know when they’ve said too much and will get the beating of their life for it.

One of the most famous Hell’s Angels members is a former leader named Ralph “Sonny” Barger. When interviewed by Maxim magazine he said,“ We started out in the 50’s having fun, riding motorcycles. In the 60’s we were beating people up and taking drugs. And in the 70’s and 80’s we got into crime and prison. The 90’s came and we straightened up our lives. Now it’s about riding motorcycles and having fun again (January Maxim, 92)).” Now as lovely as this sounds, it’s not all true.
