Selling What Can Not Be Seen

In the article “Selling What Can’t Be Seen” by Chuck Martin, he is clearly defining the need and peace of mind of intangibles. Martin shows how the security of intangibles, including such things as insurance, healthcare, and pre-paid services (cell phone services, gym membership, etc.) are a very large part of society. Through these services, a true sense of value to the customer is seen.

Martin defines the five categories of value, which include peace of mind, futures, rights, ideas, and dreams. He shows that, through these values, these tend to mean more to a customer than the price of the product. Martin also states that since these intangibles are what drive the customer to buy more, more companies should provide these services to their customers.

I feel that this article is extremely imperative to the world of marketing for several reasons. First, it shows that by properly marketing tangible products/ services, people will buy them. When the products and/ or services are intangible and people still purchase them, it is a true testament that these products/ services were market skillfully. I am also in agreement with Martin, when he states, “The bottom line is that the five categories of peace of mind, futures, rights, ideas and dreams all come under the category of value… they have a real value in the mind of a buyer.” He could not have been more on target! With out those things, I wouldn’t be interested in purchase a product. I would not buy a car with out a warranty, which gives peace of mind, God forbid if anything were to ever happen. I own a cell phone and pay to use a certain number of minutes per month. I also subscribe to phone insurance, which all fall under the category of futures. I covered my minutes used and pay incase anything were to happen to my phone in the future, preventing any more stress if anything were to happen. My family and I subscribe to cable television, which is a right we pay to through Comcast. We also pay more to get HBO and Showtime (We are all huge Sopranos and Sex and the City fans.) Recently, I paid a financial analyst to help me figure out a plan, for the future, to save money and retire early. I paid a consultant to help bring my ideas to life. Also, since I was just twenty-one, I like to go to the Borgata and Trump in Atlantic City and gamble, with the dream of winning big. All of these things, some even day-to-day products and services, are intangibles. Most people do not even realize that they are paying for these intangibles, and with out them, they might not have the comforts they desire.

In the future, I believe the market for intangibles will change in many ways. First of all, I believe that there will be more intangible products. Due to the changes in technology, on a daily basis, I believe that it will provide new inventions and a need for faster services. Secondly, I believe that, with in the next twenty-five years, we will go through a huge technological change. More families will start working from home, to spend time with their loved ones, and more students will start to take classes over the Internet. This can already be seen today.
