Animal Farm: How And Why Were The Animals’ Commandments Changed During The Course Of This Story?

Shortly after the Rebellion took place on Manor Farm, and it changed its name to ‘Animal Farm’, the Seven Commandments were created and it was said they were to “form an unalterable law by which all animals on Animal Farm must live forever after”. They were painted by Snowball with help from Squealer “in giant white letters that could be read from thirty yards away”. This goes to show just how important the Commandments were seen when they were first formed. The original seven ran as follows:

” 1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.

2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend

4. No animal shall sleep in a bed.

5. No animal shall drink alcohol.

6. No animal shall kill any other animal.

These commandments were to be followed by all the animals living on the farm at all times. They are summarised in the simple phrase: "Four legs good, two legs bad". This maxim is created for the less mentally able animals as it was short and simple so would stick in their minds such as the sheep. However, as the pigs adopt human behaviour progressively throughout the story the Seven Commandments are changed in such a way as to ju

Throughout the story the maxim "Four legs good, two legs bad", which was developed for the less intellectual animals, was used as a distraction tactic by Napoleon during Snowball’s speeches. In the end this is changed to “Four legs good, two legs better” after secluding the sheep for a week and privately teaching it to them so at the given moment would burst out into a chorus of “Four legs good, two legs better” like had been used earlier in the story. As the story progresses with the pigs in control humans play more of a role in the survival of the farm as they need to be able to trade with the humans. To begin with, the animals, including the pigs, are against any contact with humans and consider any contact with them to be a sin. Nevertheless, as the book progresses the pigs trade increasingly with the humans until by the end they are working hand-in-hand with them.

The way the Seven Commandments are gradually altered displays much irony. When Squealer, a propagandist, changes the Commandments one by one, he changes the meaning underlying the revolution completely.

The next commandments to change is "No animal shall kill other animal". This happens not long after the confessions and executions of animals on the farm that were supposed traitors and in league with Snowball. After these executions, again Muriel, Clover and also Benjamin plus some other animals felt this did not square with this commandment. Once again, the pigs have changed the Commandments in order to justify their actions. The animals read the Commandment they though did not agree, "No animal shall kill other animal without cause”, and then the animals see how really the Commandments had not been violated.

"No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets" after the pigs moved into the farmhouse. Some of
