The Rainmaker

City: Random House Inc. New York, New York

Rudy Baylor, a law student, was looking forward to an internship at a prestigious firm but it didn’t go quite as he planned. The firm he had been invited to work for was purchased by a much larger firm. In the process of being bought, he was left out of the deal and under the new ownership Rudy was no longer guaranteed his job. There were no more job openings for lawyers in Memphis and many of his fellow students decided to start their own firms. Throughout college Rudy had worked at a bar on campus called Yogi’s owned by Prince.

Rudy was taking a class geared toward getting experience and they had to help give free legal advice to seniors. He met the Black family and Mrs. Birdie. The black family consisted of Dot, Donny Ray and Buddy. Dot consulted Rudy about Donny Ray chemotherapy that they couldn’t afford and their insurance wouldn’t pay for. Their insurance agency was Great Benefit, an agency geared toward lower class people who don’t know much about law and hate lawyers. Great Benefit denied all claims and took the chance that the lower class people wouldn’t consult a lawyer. Rudy looked ove

The Black case went to court and Great benefit hired an expensive firm and was represented by Drummond. Kipler was the judge for the case and quickly showed he was on Rudy’s side. Rudy requested that Donny Ray’s testimony was video taped as soon as possible because he wouldn’t live much longer. Kipler granted that request and soon Rudy was rehearsing with Donny Ray. Donny Ray tried to look as pathetic as possible to earn sympathy from the jury not that he didn’t already look pathetic. Rudy was happy with Donny Ray’s final testimony. Rudy talked to many other lawyers that had tried cases against the Great Benefit agency and got a lot of dirt on them. He found a manual given to workers that said all claims would be denied. Information that Rudy should have received from Great Benefit was late and Kipler fined Great Benefit.

Rudy was having a hard time paying bills and was evicted from his apartment and he filed for bankruptcy. In a stroke of luck he visited Mrs. Birdie and she offered him the apartment above the garage in her back yard. Of course he accepted and they agreed on a low monthly payment as long as he helped her with the yard work. Rudy quickly moved in and Mrs. Birdie worked him hard in the yard.

Dot came back from Florida and got a new lawyer who consulted Rudy and was told she didn’t have that much money.

Mrs. Birdie’s relatives had stopped by her house for whatever reason and found the will in Rudy’s apartment. They didn’t know she had so much money and they began sucking up to her so that they’d be in her will. Mrs. Birdie went to live with them in Florida, leaving Rudy in charge of her house. He knew that they had found the will but Mrs. Birdie was happy so he didn’t tell her.

While Rudy was at the hospital and supposed to be looking for clients he was really studying for the bar exam. He sat in a grill in the hospital and was buried in law books. Rudy saw a young lady get out of her wheel chair and sit down to eat after being escorted by a male nurse. She was crying and Rudy went over and talked to her. Her name was Kelly Riker and she was abused by Cliff Riker, her husband. Rudy was kind to her and advised to get a divorce and offered to file it for her. She declined saying that Cliff loved her and wouldn’t do it again.

The Black case had made little progress, except for filing suit and Rudy got them signed over to him again. Mrs. Birdie’s will was in the middle of being drafted but Rudy ran into some problems. She said that she had inherited money from her husband
