The Pros And Cons Of Being A Student Athlete

The Pros and Cons of Being a Student Athlete

When involved in an athletic event student athletes have the opportunity to be involved with both positive and negative experiences such as gaining a healthier life style, positive influences on their work ethics, losing their school priorities and finding that there is not enough down time for themselves so they can just relax and take a break. Student Athletes need to consider what they are getting themselves into. Do they believe that they can handle what will be happening o them in college?

Imagine a college student athlete with the feelings of adrenaline pumping through their veins strapping up their helmet before the big game, stretching out their legs before the 800-meter run or standing at the foul line getting ready to take the game winning shot. There are millions of student athletes that choose to have their lives altered in not only positive ways but also in negative ways too. Being a student athlete betters lifestyles by having the students become healthier individuals and gaining work ethics that will help later in their life in the job force but also can hurt them because they have less time to themselves which in turn makes it harder to stay focused

2:00pm-4:00pm Meetings with professors, work study

Being involved with college athletics is like having a full time job. You have classes everyday, practices each afternoon, games, meetings, weightlifting, bus rides and morning practices too. If added up, the time spent at these activities much outweighs the amount of time that is left for an athlete to have to himself or herself. When athletes finally get back to their rooms and have time, they have to end up doing homework anyways. So student athletes have to be able to use time management skills in order to get everything that they need completed. This is an example of a student athlete’s schedule. Leigh plays Division II intercollegiate volleyball and softball.

“The hardest thing about not having enough time is we are always trying to have fun, “said Chirod Williams a linebacker for the Tech football team. “We’d like getting out at night, chill with friends, or do some other hobbies or activity other than studying or doing something in relation to our sport. Especially here at Georgia Tech we need to study all the time, but it’s hard to stay focused.” Another student, Megan Byrd, a member of the Georgia Tech women’s track team stated “ In some ways being a varsity athlete restricts me to what I can do as far as the college experience”. When time is finally found, the urge to sleep is a lot stronger than the urge to study. By not staying focused on what is supposed to be done, priorities are lost and the real reason behind college is lost. (Neal, n.p.) Managing their time is necessary to keep their priorities straight.
