Marijuana, (Cannabis sativa) weed, ganja, bud, reefer, pot, dope, gage, sess, smoke, skunk, Mary Jane, cannabis, grass, or sens… No matter how it’s said, it’s a controversial issue in America; but why? Why is it that in our culture, no one has a problem with some one who drinks at a social event to loosen up a little, but a person who smokes a little pot at a concert is seen as a social deviant? The value of the negative effects of marijuana is overstated for a few different reasons. Ignorance to the facts of marijuana is the primary source for the perpetuation of the negative social stigma pot carries. Blatant disregard of the similarities marijuana has to alcohol and the classification of pot as a "drug" also continue to uphold the negative attitude towards weed. The actual definition of a drug is any substance that has an effect on the central nervous system causing a change in behavior. Although technically marijuana is a drug, so are caffeine, nicotine and obviously alcohol. Are chocolate and Coca-Cola illegal because they make your heart speed up? Alcohol, however, is known to cause liver damage, such as cirrhosis and cancer as well as damage to the pancreas, usually cancer. Granted, when marijuana is smoked, it does cause damage to the lungs. Nevertheless, it has been proven that lung cells do re-grow and repair themselves while cells in the pancreas and liver can never be re-grown. In order to avoid the negative effects of smoking weed, one could eat marijuana in baked goods, drink it brewed in a tea, chew it like tobacco, or even drop a liquid form of THC directly in the mouth. Marijuana in America hasn’t always been seen as "bad." In colonial times, before it was illegal, farmers were required to dedicate a certain percentage of their farming land to growing hemp because it is such a valuable resource. The hemp plant can be woven into a strong rope, or even cloth for shirts, pants, and bags. Non-supporters of legalization raise the counter-argument that if pot is in fact legalized, everyone would just walk around stoned all the time. This is an outlandish claim that obviously was not thought over. Consider that alcohol is a legal drug. How many people do you see per day who are publicly intoxicated?
