Mormons And Jews (The Similarities That Brought Them Worlds Apart)
Any reasonably intelligent person would never even think to mention them in the same breath during a conversation. Mormons, after all are Christians, and Jews, well, they’re Jews. Everyone knows that they are two different worlds completely unrelated. Or are they really? During this semester our world history class has discussed communities in large detail. We have studied several distinct communities in some particular. We have tried to define them, compare them, separate them, and understand them all in hopes to better comprehend the world at large, and how we fit into it, and what our place is in it. Two of these communities that have greatly stood out to me are the Mormons and the Jews. As we have studied these two communities their differences obviously stood out, but what was even more intriguing to me is that their similarities became more apparent than ever before. The focus of this paper is to discuss how the similarities in the cosmovisions of the Mormons and the Jews, (made up of their histories, religious beliefs, encounters with other communities, and cultural aspects) are also the cause for their resulted differences. Each of the sections making up the cosmovisions of these two comm
From their history the Jews claim their religious beliefs. They believe in the Old Testament prophets such as Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and Moses. They believe that these men received the word of God and then related it to the people so that they would be instructed in the ways of God. During the time of Moses, God gave the Ten Commandments, which were later expounded upon and called the Law of Moses. This was what governed and still governs the Jewish people. The other history, the common view known generally is that the Mormons started as a religious group in 1830 under the hand of Joseph Smith, who had received a divine manifestation. This official restoration of their community was a very important aspect to the Mormons. The Mormons believe that because of these new beginnings they are claim to once again be the chosen people of the Lord entitled to all the blessings that the Jews were once entitled to. Now, the Mormons are the remnants of the House of Israel grafted in to the seed of Abraham. These two histories firmly come into play with the other parts of the Mormon cosmovision. The Law of Moses dictates to the people not only their religious beliefs, but also their political, social, and cultural way of living. One important religious event in the history of the Jews was the Passover. Now, in the present it is still widely celebrated by Jews everywhere, but many of them look at it as a festival or cultural aspect of their beleifs. Of course not all Jews believe in this Law of Moses in the same way or with the same fervor as some. However, the Jewish people in general are very faithful to their cultures and customs that result from their religious beliefs even if they do not actively follow the religion. Of course th
