The characters in this novel are all very opposite and separately unique. There are four chapters in the novel that are narrated by four different people. The first three chapters consist of the combined memories, inner monologues, and voices of the three Compson brothers. The author narrates the fourth chapter as an attached observer. To sum up, William Faulkner’s The Sound And The Fury is a complex novel, forcing its reader to have total concentration. However, when the final page is turned, it’s all worth the rereading, aggravation, and countless nights spent in a worn-out reading chair.

The total demise of the Compson family can be described as a “riches-to-rags” story. The Compson’s land is transformed into a golf course when Mr. “deadbeat” Compson exchanges it for money towards college expenses for Quentin. While attending Harvard, Quentin commits suicide feeling drained and ashamed of his deteriorating family. Landless and mentally deranged, the family begins to fall apart. Once Caddy is gone, she sends money to her daughter, Miss Quentin, for her well being. However, selfish Jason intercepts the money to keep for himself. Jason takes the mail and gives Mrs. Compson a fake check to burn (he had brainwashed her into believing that any money from Caddy is tainted).
