Regardless of whether the U.S. dollar has been weak or strong against other world currencies, the trade deficit persists. This is because during this period the United States imported around $2.5 trillion more of goods than it exported. At the same time that the United States has been running a deficit in its trade account, Japan has been running a surplus in its trade account. Approximately 30 percent of the deficit has been with Japan, which has created trade tensions between the two countries.
