The Unknown Epidemic

Brandi Renee Laird is an average student and teenager. She lives in Anderson, Indiana and has attended Anderson High School for four years. She is very fond of comic books and one-day hopes she can be like Wonder-Woman. No matter how true Brandi's friends wish these statements could be, they are inaccurate. These statements are inaccurate because in the winter of 2000, Brandi took her own life. She had attended Anderson High School for two years and been a daughter, granddaughter, sister, and friend for sixteen years.

Every year thousands of teens die in the United States, not by cancer, car crashes, and other diseases, but by their own hand. These teens make the choice that they want to die, and they take their own lives. Suicide, the term given to killing oneself, is the third leading cause of death among people between the ages of 15 and 25 ("Suicide" Grolier). Few people argue that taking ones life is justifiable. It is not condoned in most all religions and cultures. So why do so many teens take their lives every year?

In a startling editorial by Karen Bush and Denise Panchias in the newspaper “Providence Journal,” both concurred that since 1960 suicide rates have tripled. Also reported was that 24 percent of

It possibly could be because the teenage years are a period of confusion for just about everyone. Teens are learning new social roles, developing new relationships, getting used to changes in their bodies, and making decisions about their future. Also, when looking for answers to problems, it seems as if no one has them. This can make anyone feel quite alone. Teenagers experience strong feelings of confusion, self-doubt, pressure to succeed, financial uncertainty, and other fears while growing up. The uncertainties of the future is what drives teens crazy and makes them feel as if suicide is the only way to end their pain and frusterations.

So what pushed Brandi over the edge? Depressed over her recent breakup and overwhelmed with her schoolwork, Brandi thought it better to take her own life than to tough it out like all of her friends.

Rhode Island high school students had seriously considered suicide and 10 percent had actually attempted suicide. What is so bad now that teens feel they have to take their lives at such an alarming rate (Bush)?

In an article titled "A 'tragedy of apathy' in teen's suicide," M. Cristina Medina stated that "Teenagers commit suicide because there is too much pain in their lives and they can do one of two things; move from the pain or learn to cope with it." Some teenagers learn to cope with the overwhelming flow of emotions and pain; however, others do not. Suicide is the reason 15,000 people around the world die every year. This statistic grows by the minute (Medina).

In this day an age, a hard earned dollar doesn’t get one much. Maybe it can get a pop at Ricker’s or a bag of chips at the local Village Pantry; however, it doesn’t go a long way to help pay the essential bills, buy clothes, or pay for college. Teens today, for the most part, have an idea of how hard it is to make good money without furthering their education past high school. The predicament teen’s run into is how to pay for these bills or college. Teenagers are supposed to be able to do it all. Teens are supposed to be able to get good grades, hold a job, pay bills, and balance any other problems that may arise. However, name one person that can do this without a problem. It is impossible. Therefore, it is implausible that a teenager, without years of experience and learning self-sacrifice, would be able to do this. Teenagers become so involved in trying to succee
