The Vengeance

In Sports, each team uses a mascot to represent the their team, as does each school use a mascot to represent their entire school. In like fashion Uncle Sam represents The United States. He represents the general spirit, opinions, and ideas of the American people. Charles Dickens, in a novel about the French revolution entitled A Tale of Two Cities, uses the character called The Vengeance as sort of a mascot as well. It would be virtually impossibly for an author to characterize every revolutionary one by one. For this he uses, the bloodthirsty Vengeance portray to the general spirit, opinions, and ideas of the French revolutionaries.
When the bloodthirsty monarchs and nobles are overthrown, they are immediately replaced by the revolutionaries who are just as vicious. The power is turned over to the patriot civilians and tyranny is seen almost instantly when the nobles are beheaded one after another everyday. The character called The Vengeance, representing the revolutionaries , demonstrates how when the power is turned from the upper class to the lower, revenge reigns. As the revolutionaries seek their revenge, we see that either they do not know when to stop, or do not care when to stop. Yes, they secure their freedom from the monarchs, but obviously that is not enough for all the pain and suffering they have experienced in the past. They begin using the guillotine to execute every noble they find. When Madame Defarge and The Vengeance try to have Lucie executed, it almost seems as if they cannot get enough of murdering because Lucie was, by birth, one of them. Also, when Carton (who they thought was Darnay), was to be executed, The Vengeance says "And Evremonde will be killed in a wink, and she not here! [Madame Defarge] See her knitting in my hand, and her empty chair ready for her. I cry with rage and disappointment" (337). This statement shows that the executions are almost a pastime for them, something to attend for entertainment.
