So when applying this issue of homelessness to an act of deviant behavior, it is obvious that it is an attribute. Homeless people are considered deviant for the simple fact that they fit into a certain class and group in society that breaks the social norms. They give the population a socially variance and are therefore socially different. We feel that homeless people fall into the “New View” that we learned about in class. They are socially constructed, their status is arbitrary and subjective and most definitely circumstantial. They have a discredited stigma about them that makes them immediately noticed, and by being discredited they have no control over their stigma. Instead of just using book, journal, and web informational resources, we are definitely grateful that we took the extra step in our efforts for researching our project. It is safe to say that this class has been very insightful and a great learning experience for both of us. Another homeless person, Mr. Benson, fifty-eight years old was hanging out near the downtown main public library; he was rather moody and rude. When we asked him to answer a few questions, his first response was “Leave me alone,” but them added, “What the hell do you want from me. I do not have anything to say to you, just leave me alone; okay?” As he began to smoke, we replied nicely, “It is fine you so not have to answer us if you so no want to. And please do not be rude, we are just trying to learn something about the homeless so that we can inform people and clear up any stereotypes.” Soon afterward, he began telling us about his life. He relaxed, put his sign on the ground, and began to talk.

Our study showed seven out nine homeless people seemed to be mentally disturbed. Their stories proved that they are overwhelmingly anti-social and that they do not like to deal with job stress, and detest rules. It is practically impossible to conduct a true census of homeless persons. Because traditional census methods focus on the household as the unit of measurement, homeless persons are automatically ineligible based on this criteria. Furthermore, many homeless are likely to be transient, moving from place to place, further complicating the process. Therefore, all estimates of the number of homeless persons in America are flawed.
