This positive attitude Suzy Ruder has is what makes her inclusion program successful. This is the perspective that everyone involved in the inclusion process needs to have in order to make inclusion beneficial because it is a team effort, not just one person can make it work. Granted, Suzy Ruder is a great team leader. If the team, including the general education teacher, educational services support staff and the inclusion facilitator did not believe in the program it would not have succeeded. In most school districts inclusion is already in place. Unfortunately, not all of them are successful as the program at Hinsdale Central High School. I have mixed feeling on the subject, to be honest. I believe that the students should most definitely be taught in the least restrictive environment, as long as it is beneficial to the student. In some instances, depending on the special education student, full day inclusion may be too much and maybe they would benefit from part time inclusion. If I had a child with special needs, I, like any other parent, would want their child to be in the best environment possible to learn. As a prospective teacher, I would want to teach my students to the best of their ability. As a taxpayer, I would want my money to go toward successful programs that will help develop good citizens. Inclusion gives special education students a chance to do all of this. Special need’s students can be in a great learning atmosphere learning to the best of their ability, with their peers, taking part in successful programs. It just does not happen overnight. It takes a lot of hard work, the kind of hard work Suzy Ruder put forth to make her program successful. As you read in Ruder’s article, it can happen, and the hard work most certainly pays off in the end. Suzy Ruder states, “Including special-needs students in general education classrooms can be challenging for teachers, administrators, and students-but it is well worth the effort.” Ruder is talking about the benefits of inclusion. Inclusion would not have been introduced to special education if it was not beneficial to the student. Ruder discusses a girl named Ann and her IEP on the last page of her article. This girl sticks out in my mind because I think it is wonderful what inclusion is doing for her. Her IEP states that her classmates are not supposed to be aware of Ann’s special needs and the teachers respect that (it is the law). The teacher adjusts the curriculum around Ann’s needs and her self esteem is not affected. In this situation inclusion is working. It is great that Ann’s needs are being met like this in an environment she is comfortable and proud to be in. The article describes inclusion by saying, “Inclusion is not only legal, it’s the right thing to do.” It can be hard describing inclusion because the topic is not black and white. It is very case sensitive depending on the individual’s IEP. Inclusion needs many things to work. These things include support from staff and students, time, training, organization and most of all, communication between everyone involved.
