One way in which the theme of Training Day could be corruption leading to a downfall is that fact that Alonzo, played by Denzel Washington and the bad cop of the movie, was a good cop when he first started out as a rookie. However with more experience and exposure to how the streets really operated, Alonzo slowly went onto a corruptive path. To prove this, in one scene of the movie Alonzo admits to Jake Hoyt, the rookie cop played by Ethan Hawke, that when he first started out as a cop he was good and believed in following all the rules. He

then admitted that he realized that in order for him to achieve certain accomplishments and to make his way up to a detective, he would have to do things that may cause him to cross the line that police officers are to abide by, while enforcing the law. Alonzo may have also learned from some of the other veteran cops who may have been corrupt.

As a result to this ultimatum, Alonzo came up with a plan to rob a former drug dealer, whom he had been acquainted to. Alonzo and a few other corrupt cops in his unit, along with Jake Hoyt, went into the drug dealer’s house on a raid in which they found over four million dollars in cash in a chest underneath the kitchen floor of the house. Alonzo and the other cops split one million of the four million dollars, but Hoyt refused to take his cut because he believed that it wasn’t right. After that robbery, Alonzo had enough money to pay off the Russians and save his life. However, he lost the money when Hoyt busted him and took the money as evidence, after he had made an attempt to have Hoyt murdered. With no money to pay the Russians, Alonzo was violently killed by a Russian hit squad while riding around the city. The violent way in which Alonzo was killed and his the actions he used to prevent this from happening, all illustrate how his own corruption and greed led to his downfall.

Some symbolization within Training Day also shows how corruption can take over one’s life and lead to their downfall. One specific type of symbolization is the use of colors throughout the movie. If you notice, most of the articles of clothing that Alonzo wears in the movie are black. The color black traditionally represents evil or corruption, and having Alonzo wear black helps to illustrate his corruption and the fact that he is sort of the
