The Wife Of His Youth
When you’re young you do things that can be considered foolish when you’re older. Mr. Ryder was a young slave and he married Liza Jane. When he was older he forgot all about her. What’s foolish about that is he didn’t go and look for her after she had been sold down the river. Instead, he started a new life with her not in it. I think Charles Chesnutt looks at Mr. Ryder as a man who should have looked for his wife after the war. The Blue Vein Society is a group of individuals that were mixed and considered more white than black because you could see their blue veins. Today, you must acknowledge that other races exist, not only blacks. Mr. Ryder, a slave in his past, moved to the north after the war and worked at a railroad company for many years. All through the years he never thought of his wife because he considered her gone from his life. After years of hard work and saving up his money, he is able to live comfortably in a nice house in a nice neighborhood. Then along the way he meets Molly Dixon and falls in love with her. He decides to propose to her at the ball he is going to throw. Chesnutt believes that he shouldn’t get married because he already is. Then Liza Jane shows up and makes Mr. Ryder remember and feel bad about what he has done to her and he decides to tell everyone about Liza. At the end of the story when Mr. Ryder tells every
