The Courtier: Book 1

The selected dialogue begins on page 81 and ends on page 90. It begins with the debate of which is better, the current vernacular language, or Latin. The men then argue if it is good to copy somebody’s writing style or not. They then discuss what affect affection has on grace, using women’s need to wear make up as an example. The importance of writing and reading is then discussed. The conversation ends with the discussion of great leaders who read and write. The participants in this dialogue are Federico, Count Lodovico, Signora Emilia, Costanza Fregoso and Magnifico Giuliano.

Federico feels that Latin should be used often. He argues that it is good to emulate Latin writers because they wrote so well, so there is no point in changing the writing style. Since Latin is a very complex language, he feels that writers should imitate the classic Latin writers because they were so skilled. Federico says that the genius of language is found when a writer adopts the same meanings and styles as the best writers.

Count Lodovico is the main speaker throughout this dialogue. He feels that Latin should seldom be used because it is unnatural in current times. He makes the point that those who are copied are always superior t

Count Lodovico has a very interesting quote that could easily spark a class discussion. “The taint of affection always robs everything of grace and that the highest degree of grace is conferred by simplicity and nonchalance, in praise of which, and in condemnation of affection, much more could be said.”

The idea of secularism can be found in the Count’s discussion about affection and grace. He states how women often cover themselves in make-up to artificially look good. This is a secular concept that became very popular during the Renaissance. Before that, most people didn’t bother wearing make-up because God made them beautiful and it was never good to change what God created. However, as thoughts of God waned, women realized that they could make themselves look better, even if it went against God.

Signora Emilia and Costanza Fregoso don’t voice their opinions in this dialogue, and are only there to keep the conversation flowing. Magnifico Giuliano, however, feels that it is horrible that France doesn’t stress the need for reading and writing in any way.

As for the debate of whether or not writers should imitate previous ones, I feel that they should to some extent. If you ever have trouble performing a task, whether it be writing or farming or playing sports, you should always look back on people who performed the task best. However, you shouldn’t base everything on others’ ideas, you
