Federico feels that Latin should be used often. He argues that it is good to emulate Latin writers because they wrote so well, so there is no point in changing the writing style. Count Lodovico has a very interesting quote that could easily spark a class discussion. “The taint of affection always robs everything of grace and that the highest degree of grace is conferred by simplicity and nonchalance, in praise of which, and in condemnation of affection, much more could be said.”

The idea of secularism can be found in the Count’s discussion about affection and grace. He states how women often cover themselves in make-up to artificially look good. This is a secular concept that became very popular during the Renaissance. Before that, most people didn’t bother wearing make-up because God made them beautiful and it was never good to change what God created. However, as thoughts of God waned, women realized that they could make themselves look better, even if it went against God.

Signora Emilia and Costanza Fregoso don’t voice their opinions in this dialogue, and are only there to keep the conversation flowing. Magnifico Giuliano, however, feels that it is horrible that France doesn’t stress the need for reading and writing in any way.

As for the debate of whether or not writers should imitate previous ones, I feel that they should to some extent.
