Yet, launching out the commitments of sustaining the two was nearly impossible. Lingering questions of the Earth Summit, held shortly after the end of the Cold War in Rio, June 1992, still persist as a result of discord and reluctance among nations. It now seems that people are expecting much from what will be the outcome of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa in September this year. An establishment of an ultimate breakthrough, which will provide specific measures such as clear goals and timetables, is crucial according to many. Recent efforts have been conspicuously dominated by an economic development. In conclusion, continuation of development is essential, not only for the third world countries, but also for the environment of the industrialized world. Continuation of free trade and further development is especially crucial for the third world countries, because pollutants from conventional resources can only be reduced when further environmental and economic development is achieved. Further development and free trade is benign for the industrialized countries also, for it further enhances people’s living standard, which in turn, contributes to further purification of the environment. The greenhouse myth, brought up mainly by the greens is somewhat daunting and proven to be exaggerated in its seriousness. In my opinion, environmental activists’ view that preservation of nature and ecosystem can only be achieved through barring further development is egotistic and ignorant. Notwithstanding all these reasons evincing the vital need of further development, others contend that open trade and further economic proliferation is too dangerous. They fear that creation of too much interdependency among nations will cause unavoidable “race to the bottom,” which will slowly deteriorate the environment down to an irremediable stage. Nonetheless, I believe this is another reason why faster industrialization across the world must be established, because diplomatic disputes will automatically submerge when fair amount of wealth enables the nations to cooperate together. However, in order to reduce any negative impact from such inevitable diplomatic conflict, governmental and local effort to devise environmental-friendly technologies and policies must become a priority. Further development by means of globalization is the only game in town that will grant the means for the humanity’s survival. Reiterating the following words form an English poet William Blake, we need to remind ourselves that we must not deviate from what the reality is:
