Theodore Roosevelt
The war in Iraq and the war on terror rages on. Men and women from all over the United States have died, and are dying, for a cause that has been greatly under question by the American people, and countries all over the world. The one mainstay in this war on terror has been our President of the United States of America, George W. Bush. While many people have challenged his stand on world leadership, and his using the U.S. to fight the war on terror almost totally alone, he has not backed down. This type resilience has been displayed by Presidents in the past, but not by many. One name that comes to mind when thinking of Presidents standing tall and keeping with what they believe in is Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt (T.R.) was born in New York to a distinguished New York family. T.R. started out in politics as a state assembly man in 1880. Once his feet were wet in politics, his career took off. While the loss of his wife and mother on the same day slightly nudged him off his political course, he never quit and eventually became the President of the United States. T.R. had many strong beliefs, as do many people, but his beliefs differed from the other great Presidents in that he never backed down from what he believed i
Theodore Roosevelt was a Rough Rider. He was a man who had a goal and stuck to it. In a day in age where there were many problems that needed to be addressed in the United States he helped to solve many of them while he was in office. Today’s society however, would not be that accepting of a man that swam naked in the Potomac River, or that called the Presidency a “bully pulpit”. The public today would want a man that they feel they can rely on, and for many they antics of T.R. would dismiss any chance of that. The country we live in today would not accept a man that believes more war needs to go around. This country now needs peace, and many would argue that T.R. would not give it to the United States. Media is a very large part of the Presidency, and how a President is displayed to the public, and today’s media would not be very amused with his “steady diet of colorful antics” (The American Experiment Vol. II). While the American public today is vastly different from the American public one-hundred years ago, some things remain the same. Both publics wanted economic growth and both wanted their land to be saved for generations to come. Theodore Roosevelt did both of those, but in a manner that was acceptable then, but not so much now. T.R was a great President in his time, but his time is now over, we need someone that can secure us, and make us feel safe from the problems that exist in the world. Theodore Roosevelt wouldn’t be the man for this day in age’s United States of America. One may argue now that this President would never fit into today’s society, and this may be true, but before one says this one must look at the good things this man stood for, and did for the United States of America. For one, T.R. stood for bolstering the American conservation movement. This one such thing is something that today’s leadership almost completely ignores. Today our rainforests and oceans are being polluted; T.R. would not have stood for this. T.R. stood for the good of our
