Threat Of Nuclear Weapons
Humankind has the power to destroy itself. Now that’s a scary thought. The nuclear age has changed the world, for the good and the bad. It is hard to argue whether the bad is greater than the good, but for now I am going to have to stick with the good. The threat of nuclear weapons deters the international powers from starting a full scale war, like that of WW2. It proved to be true, with the end of the Cold War, but the threat of nuclear war is still in the air, it may still in the end, destroy us all. We sometimes ponder to our selves, what would happen if we were forced into a nuclear war. The way life after such an incident would change as we know it drastically. Millions of lives at stake, the planet would be destroyed in the eyes of those few who will survive the torment to see it. No Government, or persons, can win a nuclear war and as long as there are nuclear missiles of mass destruction there will always be the risk of someone using them. In this age once the first missile is unleashed there is no telling where it would stop. The idea of using nuclear weapons defeats the purpose of war it self, but the threat remains because not all may hold that accountable.
Although the complete elimination of nuclear weapons is not likely to be in the cards, the least bit of control of nuclear arms is. The agreements of nuclear arms is a strong strategy in avoiding tense situations that could lead to nuclear war, like that of the Cuban missile crises. Any type of agreement that promotes the reduction of nuclear weapons is a step in the right direction to avoid nuclear war. Most importantly agreements in attempts to slow the arms race also is a means as best stated in the readings, “seeking to structure the nuclear balance in such a way that each side has incentives not to resort to the use of nuclear weapons in crises situations”. In another words a means to avoid nuclear war, resorting to other methods. Although all agreements made since the start of the nuclear era has been important, some of the more significant agreements have been the Nuclear Non Proliferation treaty (NPT), the SALT I ABM Treaty, the SALT I Interim agreement, and the START treaties. One of the most important agreements, the NPT treaty has the international atomic energy agency in Vienna conduct inspections of peaceful nuclear programs under the terms of the treaty, it has helped end nuclear programs in such countries as Argentina, Brazil, and South Africa, but it has also failed to make mandatory inspections in such countries as North Korea, Iran, and Iraq. The SALT I ABM Treaty limited the U.S. and USSR to no more than one site for antiballistic missile systems, with a maximum number of launchers and missiles, and prohibited the development, testing, and deployment of systems and components. The SALT I Interim Agreement succeeded in freezing the number of ballistic missiles of the USSR and the U.S. While the SALT agreement had the effects of slowing down the nuclear race the START agreements has looked for the decrease in the existing number of nuclear warheads. All these treaties have been implemented for the development and cause of reducing the chances of a nuclear war. The problem now lies not in how the U.S. and Russia deal with each other since the Cold War is over, but it lies in the up coming countries engaging in the arming of nuclear weapons. This is why the threat of nuclear war lies in the hands of those countries, because countries such as North Korea, Iran, and Iraq have not been involved with the agreements directly, all the agreements focus has mainly revolved around finding a way to prevent U.S. and Russia from starting a nuclear war whether or not other countries have been involved. Another problem is that countries such as North Korea, Iran and Iraq have continued to violate its owned signed agreements on NPT without any grave consequence, and b
