Then And Now

Russia or Russian federation, independent republic in Eastern Europe and northern Asia, the world’s largest country by area. Russia was once the largest and the most prominent republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR, or Soviet Union). In 1991 the USSR broke apart and Russia became an independent country. The USSR had a totalitarian political system in which the Communist Party leaders controlled all aspects of the government. The state used to own all the land, companies, and the government controlled production of goods and other aspects of the economy. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia began transforming itself into a more democratic society. Russia under went many changes since it became an independent country. Russia has gone through many struggles to rebuilt the country into a democratic political system and a to establish a free market economy to replace the strict system that was controlled by the communist party. Russia has made many successful changes: There have been free elections at all levels of government; private ownership of property has been legalized; and large segments of the economy are now privately owned. The transformation is far from complete. The tr

The Russian party system has been completely transformed after the breakup of the Soviet Union. The CPSU or the Communist party of the Soviet Union has been replaced by hundreds of political groups, factions, movements, and parties that span a wide political spectrum, from monarchists to communists. The parties range in size from few members to many members. The two major political parties present in Russia are Liberal Democratic Party of Russia lead by Vladimir Volfovich ZHIRINOVSKIY, and Agrarian Party lead by Mikhail Ivanovich LAPSHIN, which dominated by supporters of the collective farms system inherited from the Soviet era. Because of the many different parties there’s some political Social Cleavages that come up between the parties, but most of the Social Cleavages are cause because of the move to a democratic society, and a movement towards a free market economy has caused Russia to have a greater division between the rich and the poor. Russia also has a mixed ethnicity from its days in the Soviet Union so there are many social cleavages based on ethnicity. There are also some cleavages based on economic class with the rich being very rich and the poor being very poor.

The Russian economic, judicial, and party system has also contributed to establish the new Russian government. After the breakup of the USSR, reformers in the Teltsin government south to integrate Russia into the global economy and to obtain outside financial assistance for market reforms. Having assumed all the USSR’s foreign debts, Russia called for a meeting with its foreign creditors to reschedule the payments. Russia eventually reached a long-term repayment agreement with a group of government creditors known as the Paris Club, and in 1997 it concluded a long-term agreement with a group of commercial bank creditors know as the London Club. In the mid 1990’s Russia began receiving financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund and started building their credits. The economy has some what rebounded, growing by an average of more than 6% annually in 1999-2001 on the back of higher oil prices and a weak ruble the Russian form of currency. This recovery, along with a renewed government effort in 2000 and 2001 to advance lagging structural reforms, have raised business and investor confidence over Russia's prospects in its second decade of transition. Yet serious problems persist. Russia remains heavily dependent on exports of commodities, particularly oil, natural gas, metals, and timber, which account for over 80% of exports, leaving the country vulnerable to swings in world prices. The GNP of Russia as of 2000 was $252 and $2 per Capital Gross was according to the index of the world countries by GNP and the growth of GNP is excepted to reach 7% - 10% in 2002. In 2001 Russia est. about 51.7 billion dollars in imports from Germany, Belarus, Ukraine, US, Kazakhstan, and Italy.
