Tillch And Community
We must have faith and doubt in the ultimate and we express that through our religious communities and the church. We must be able to understand faith and the meaning behind it in order to involve ourselves with it. This is Tillichs out look on Community. In order to understand we have set up the language, past experience, and common knowledge within the community. Without language there is no way to understand the symbols and myths that belong to whatever religion it is that we participate in. Beyond religion this rings true in almost every aspect of life. In order to belong to a community followers have set language, symbols, myths, and content to help them understand their faith. Catholics have the resurrection, the Eucharist, and the set traditions from very long ago. Some religions have no dancing or singing others have fellowship to knock on the doors of others and have them join in with them. Outside from religion ballet masters know what a pas de trios is and the baseball community knows what a bunt is. A bunt in that community is very different from the culinary art communities bunt. That is why there is language, routine, and a set of standards for most all communities.
They still have the strive for the New Being and have faith in the community itself. This community can stand the differences in its member’s love. There is no one set religion for this community. (ST3 150-155) We know that there has to be persons to fall back on in hard times, to talk to, and to look at as doing the right thing. Persons have to be there who have the outlook on the ultimate, the faith, and the doubt to match your own in order for you to be considered community to you. Yet in every thing that I have read it is in no more of a bold print than the rest of Tillichs philosophies. Community is the most important aspect to the human interaction when it comes to faith in the ultimate. The Spiritual Community is the New Being. This is the ideal being that each of the members in the community is striving to be. It may never be fully reached but can become closer and closer to total New Being. The only true New Being is Jesus the Christ. He was flesh and blood, is unambiguous, and is divine. The community may work towards that goal but Tillich says they will never fully reach it. The basis of faith can take them on the path to that road and make them strive for something more. It is the spirit that grasps us. It is the spirit that allows the ultimate to find us. It is the spirit which makes us recognize that the spirit in the Christ and also makes him the Christ.
