A family’s reputation was very important to many people in this book. When Tom was in jail before the trial, his wife had a hard time finding work because no one wanting to have anything to do with a rapist’s family. Aunt Alexandra based her judgment of a lot of things on a family’s reputation. She also denied anything that put down the Finch name like the ancestral streak.

Race was the biggest factor of stereotyping. A black man’s word was nothing against a white man’s word. There wasn’t much of a chance, even when a respectable black man like Tom Robinson went against a piece of white trash like Bob Ewell.

5. Atticus had a strange way of raising his kids at that time. In present day, it wouldn’t be anything surprising. I think that he based his philosophies on raising children was based on personal learning experiences learned alone. If something happened that confused one of the kids, he would explain so they didn’t grow up thinking the wrong things.

I disagree with Atticus saying that he was a total failure at parenting. Jem and Scout both learned a lot about the world around them in the book. One example is they learned that blacks were equal to them even though nobody else considered it that way.

Atticus’s child raising philosophies were based on the rest of his life. He was one of the first to treat blacks with respect. Atticus was not a total failure in child raising but a good teacher. Jem and Scout learned much from Atticus and are philosophies.
