Robin Hood

Throughout history many stories have been passed down through the generations to be known to later generations as a myth, or legend. A myth is defined as a story, handed down from the past, which lacks accurate historical evidence but has been, and may still be, properly accepted as being true. One of those legends passed down to us from generations is the legend of Robin Hood, the so called “Prince of Thieves.” Robin Hood was a legendary English outlaw who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Robin bravely fought the sheriff of Nottingham, a corrupt official who persecuted the poor. He and a band of merry men, who lived in the Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, fought those who stole from the poor. Robin Hood is still debated to this day as to whether he was real, or just the subject to a tale of ballads and poems to entertain listeners.

Based on a real man or created as a fictional story for entertainment, the tales of Robin Hood have a rich history that many have tried to trace. Ballads were the first way that stories of a lively man named Robyn Hode were spread among the people of England. The high rate of illiteracy brought the oral traditions of passing on stories, or history. Because the wandering minstrel

As the years go by the legend of Robin Hood never dies. Is he real or was he just made up to captivate our imaginations? It’s believed that Robin was an outdoorsman trying to do well to those who needed it the most. It’s also believed that Robin Hood wasn’t the nice person that he has been seen as. He was a ruthless, cunning thief who stole people’s money and punished those who crossed in his path. As much evidence as we have of this man, it is still questionable to whether he is factual.

There are many differences about the birth and life of Robin Hood in these tales. One manuscript says that he was born in 1160 (Paul Creswick, Adventures of Robin Hood: An English Legend). Another man dates his birth at 1225; yet another manuscript states that he was born between 1285 and 1295 and that he took part in the Earl of Lancaster’s rebellion against Edward II in 1322 (A.E.W. Robin Hood and Wrenthrope). Ballads mention that Robin Hood was born in Locksley, Nottinghamshire. Another suggests that he was born in Locksley Nottinghashire, but there is no town named this on record. It has been suggested that Robin Hood was the son of William Fitzooth who held land in Loxley, and this is where the birthplace came from because of the records of ownership (Allen W. Wright, Robin Hood: Bold Outlaw of Barnsdale and Sherwood).

There are two controversies on the beginnings of Robin Hood mentioned in printed form. One source is Piers Plowman by William Langland, from around 1378. In it, a drunken priest cannot repeat the Lord’s Prayer, but he knows “rhymes of Robin Hood,” which brings the popularity of those ballads at that time. Others argue that the first genuine appearance of Robin Hood in printed form occurs in A Lytell Jeste of Robyn Hode, a poem telling the story of an outlaw and his adventures. The balla
