The main contribution of the Brooklyn Bridge is believed to be the fact that it provided easy and fast modes of transport for the range of businesses that operated in the coastal stretches of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The ferries were often crowded and slow and the journey was made arduous during the winter climate when the trip would become really choppy. Sometimes the ferries had to be stopped for days owing to the weather and that would cause severe losses for the commuters in terms of cash and kind. In addition, the limited number of boats that plied between the two ferries was not sufficient for the number of people who wanted to travel across the ferries.
