The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the well known landmarks in the United States and is considered as a very important architectural structure. The Brooklyn Bridge contributes a lot to the economics of the country, and also created a system of transportation between Brooklyn and Manhattan. The main contribution of the Brooklyn Bridge is believed to be the fact that it provided easy and fast modes of transport for the range of businesses that operated in the coastal stretches of Brooklyn and Manhattan. Before the bridge was commissioned, businesses had to use the ferry to transport their goods which were cumbersome and with the commissioning of the bridge, faster road access was a blessing to the businesses, which needed to haul their goods over a longer distance [Encarta, 2003]

The ferries were often crowded and slow and the journey was made arduous during the winter climate when the trip would become really choppy. Sometimes the ferries had to be stopped for days owing to the weather and that would cause severe losses for the commuters in terms of cash and kind. In addition, the limited number of boats that plied between the two ferries was not sufficient for the number of people who wanted to travel across the ferries. The bridge also served to transport a lot of immigrant workers to new York and Manhattan and is often referred to as the "immigrant bridge'. The bridge was instrumental in creating the rich cultural diversity of the cities of New York because it was the route taken by many to reach New York in search of jobs and better prospects. The early workers who reached Brooklyn and Manhattan contributed very much to the economic aspects of the cities because most of them were immigrant workers from many countries and their labor was very much important for the country to build its infrastructure. The industrial boom that was caused by the cultural exchanges that happened between Manhattan and New York were also significant. The bridge helped to foster cooperation between the residents of Manhattan and New York and also helped in the development and consolidation of the two cities.
