Our body is made up of cells, which is the body’s basic unit of life. Usually cells grow, divide, and produce more cells as needed to keep the body healthy. Sometimes this process can happen to rapidly and the body produces more cells than needed. The mass of unneeded cells forms a growth called a tumor. Not all tumors are detrimental to one’s health. Tumors can either be benign or malignant. Benign tumors are not cancerous. They can often be removed surgically. Once a benign tumor is removed, it does not return. They are rarely a threat to life. A thoracotomy is a major operation in which a person’s hest is opened to check for the presence of cancer.

The lungs are a pair of sponge-like, cone-shaped organs that are the largest part of the respiratory system. The right lung has three sections called lobes. It is larger than the left lobe which only has two lobes. When a person breaths, the lungs take in oxygen which allows cells to perform the tasks necessary for life. As we exhale, carbon dioxide is released from our body. Carbon dioxide is a waste product produced by the cells.
