The dominant belief of Darwin’s era, the 1800’s, fixated upon the notion that everything in existence was divinely created in its perfect form by God. This was a time when church, state, and science were all in the same. So why did Darwin, a man of God, ponder facts that were thought beyond our ability to prove, the facts that there may have been a biological reason for nature to make adaptations at the will of nature itself, and not by a divine being?

Accordingly, Charles Darwin’s collection of different species and fascination to detail along with his ability to “think outside the box” all contributed to his legendary proposal and change of mind. “Darwin proposed that natural selection on variants within populations leads to the evolution of species.” Consequently, Darwin did not continue his aspiring goal to become a clergyman, but rather invested more time pursuing his naturalistic endeavors. These endeavors included Darwin’s influential book, The Origin of Species. Charles Darwin was very apprehensive to inform the public of his theory. He neglected to publish his theory sooner than he did because he felt as though he were confessing a murder even speaking of it. With Darwin’s theory came extreme guilt, for he was deliberately defying the doctrines of the church at the time. He also waited for more evidence to pan out before he published his theory. However, when Darwin discovered that his rival scientists were beginning to make advances in the evolutionary field, he knew his work needed to be published. The ultimate decision came after his child had passed away. Darwin’s Christian beliefs died alongside his daughter, the benevolent God he believed in would never have caused such an event, thus Darwin was provided the impetus to go on with publishing.
