Piaget believed that children’s ability to learn does not develop smoothly: but instead, there are certain areas and ages where children learn easier. Piaget developed the Theory of the Four Stages Cognitive Development to better understand a child’s learning process.

Since Piaget developed his theory there have been major changes in the study of Cognitive Development. Genetic factors have been discovered and are believed to influence memory, learning and cognitive skills. We also have found that infants and young children have many more basic cognitive skills and abilities. Researchers are coming up with new theories such as the Theory Theory, which states children can learn, by trail and error. Researchers also have discovered that even small changes in the way adults talk to children effect the child’s ability to answer.( Elliot. A.J., 1981, Lecture #3)

Piaget quickly developed an interest in psychology, which caused him to move from Switzerland to Zurich. This is where he studied under C.G. Jung and Eugene Bleuler.
