Dana Tiger

Dana Tiger has established herself as one of America’s leading contemporary artist. Dana was born in 1961 and is of Creek/Seminole and Cherokee descent. She is the daughter of Jerome and Peggy tiger and has a brother named Chris and a sister named Lisa. Dana’s father was a nationally claimed artist until he died of an accidental self inflicted gunshot wound to the head in 1967, when Dana was only five. Her mother Peggy was always a housewife and remains today as her only parent. Her brother Chris was also an artist until he was murdered in 1990 and in 1992 her only surviving sibling, Lisa, was told she tested positive for HIV. Dana was married to Donnie Blair in 1992. They have a daughter named Christie and a son named Coleman Lian. They live in a log cabin studio in the country near Tahlequah, Oklahoma right in the heart of the Cherokee Nation (Dana Tiger, “Biography,” http://www.artnatam.com/dtiger/bio.html).

Dana was raised by her mother and her uncle, Johnny Tiger Jr. was sort of a father figure to her. Although Jerome Tiger died when Dana was only five, he was a prolific legacy. Dana’s Uncle Johnny recognized her talent early, and served as a mentor and tutor. Her mother Peggy also gave Dana a


Dana has donated paintings for poster projects to a number of worthwhile campaigns. In 1992 she donated an original work of art and produced a limited edition print as a part of her contribution to the Indians in Medicine project fund. She also contributed one of her works to the Native American College fund, to be used as premiums for donors to that fund. Dana was also one of the nine women selected nationally to serve as a committee member for the National Organization for Women in the planning of the national Racial and Ethic diversity conference. She has also prepared illustrations which represent culturally appropriate images in the Cancer Society’s breast cancer prevention project. Dana has also donated her work to many Agencies for fundraising events. In 1990 she donated “Patrol of the Light Horse” for the National Police Chiefs’ Convention in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1992 she created “Courage and Culture” for the AIDS Coalition for Indian Outreach. In 1993 she designed “Beautiful New Worlds” for the Ozark Literacy Council and also created “Keeping Culture Fires Burning” for the National Organization for Women, Oklahoma State Conference. In 1995 she designed “Wisdom from the Past, Strength for the Future” for the Conference on the State of the American Indian Family. Just recently in 2001 Dana sold 360 of her prints during the Red Earth Festival to help pay for the land she bought to create the Legacy Cultural Learning Community which is located on the border of Cherokee and Sequoyah counties in northeastern Oklahoma.
