Gladiator

The movie that I chose to watch that had a strong social theme was Gladiator. The movie was written and directed by Ridley Scott. Gladiator tells the story of Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius, played by Russell Crowe. Maximum defeats the rebellious Germans in battle, and Caesar asks him to become Protector of Rome during a transition back to the Republic. Maximus does not want this; he tells Caesar he only wants to return home to Spain, to his wife and son. The story continues as the honorable Maximus is captured and sent to slavery in a completely different city. Maximus is unrenowned and unknown to the world of peasantry and slavery. Gladiator shows a man that has succeeded at a young age. This man, Maximus, is then struck down. At every point in the movie after Maximum has been enslaved, he continually struggles to get his life back. The new Emperor of Rome, Commodus, seeks to destroy Maximus. Commodus ordered guard to "ravage over .

Gladiator shows different forms of character. When Maximus was captured he was injured and a man treated his wound with leaches.
