History Of Hip Hop

Have you ever wondered when and where your favorite type of music genre originated from? Have you ever wondered who began that generation of music? Well, I have. Hip-Hop and Rap has been an influence in my life as well as many people I know. I have chosen these genres to take a look into their history as well as how it has developed into what we are listening today.

Many people have said that by listening to these types of music, it influences teens to become violent and start using illegal substances. Some adults have concerns about the lyrics in Hip-Hop and Rap, which contains explicit references to sex, drugs, and racism. However, I believe that even though these artists or performers speak openly about these harsh subjects, they are only telling the audience what they feel and/or think about a certain topic. Each and every audience members should be able to distinguish the rights and wrongs of each topic.

There were many influences of rap music as early as the 1940’s but it never really started developing in the 1970’s. Urban DJ’s started to manipulate records to make scratching rhythms and other cool sounds. The “rapper” or “emcees” would then start to speak or put words to the mus

In 1987, Ice T had made the first example of “Gangster Rap.” This “Gangster Rap” is what many rap styles are based off of today.

Within the past few years, rap has become more interracial. Instead of just the normal African-American and Caucasian rappers, another race has been given more attention. Jin the Emcee was the first Asian-American rapper to be signed to a major record label. He has been on shows such as 106 and Park (BET), radio shows such as Kube 93.3 fm. (Seattle), and has a small role in the upcoming summer movie Too Fast and Too Furious.

During the years of 1982-1985, the rappers were using original music, not pre-recorded. But in 1986, sampling was developed and used. It had a huge impact on the rap community. Sampling is when an electronic device is able to replicate existing sounds or tracks. Rappers were using this type of technique to record over the top of the music. There were two major problems with sampling. One, musicians were starting to steal each other’s music and two; musicians were being replaced by samplers.

Presently, Hip-Hop and Rap are in their largest popularity times as a result of their mainstream acceptances. Thanks to those artists, such as Eminem and Kid Rock, for making Hip-Hop and Rap an international genre. Also, there are much thanks to those ladies of Hip-Hop and Rap: Salt-n-Papa, Queen Latifah, and Lil’ Kim.
