As she stands in the backyard she notices that he left the birdfeeder. Why did he leave the birdfeeder behind? Obviously he plans on coming back one day, or he would not have left the birdfeeder. I do not know about you, but if I leave a girl for good, I’d like to get all my stuff back. This line of the poem makes me think he is coming back. She mentions that “the birds don’t trust is yet” (Kane 62) (referring to the birdfeeder) which I think means that she does not fill it up with food because that was something he used to do and she feels she can not take over his duties. The poem also says that the birdfeeder is red, which could mean a couple of things. It could mean that the guy liked to wear red, or he might have had red hair. The birdfeeder can remind her of him by her thinking of his red hair or her thinking of how he looked in his red shirts or his red ties. This birdfeeder can be something that makes he feel safe that he will return. In the rest of the poem it says how she walks to the edge of the river and this could remind her of how they used to walk on the edge of the river on those nice, warm, nights. Maybe they sat out by the river on full moon nights and had some candle lit dinners.

This poem deals with the emotion of love. The lady lost her husband or boyfriend and now she walks around finding things to remember him by. In the beginning of the poem you get the sense that the man might not return but at the end when she says he left the birdfeeder for her, that could mean he will come back.
