As early as 1661, investigators realized that the waste product being released from smoke stacks in England were releasing harmful emissions that had the ability to change the environment. The main problem that they were concerned with was that it had the ability to travel long distances across Europe. The problem they were dealing with would later be known as acid rain. rrode and textiles to fade faster. In the book he wrote, “Air and Rain: The Beginnings of Chemical Climatology,” he explains the main principles that make up acid rain and the chemistry that makes it up. Scientists also 100 years later used the foundation of his research and went to Sweden to study different types of rain and noted that rain coming from the sea contained more salt and the rain coming from industrial areas contained more sulfuric acid. Connections were being made that ecosystems were being polluted with acidic rain coming from industrial areas.

Michael E. Kowalok makes sure to note that all this research and findings from scientists, are international. All the scientists rely on other people’s data and findings to help produce a beneficial finding. All the science fields are interrelated to each other. Even if someone isn’t in a certain field, they can pull data from other research fields to help prove a point in their own research.

Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) was realized as a source of chlorine. Scientists Mario J. Molina and F. Sherwood Rowland did a research project in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres to see the presents of CFC’s. They found to be in the air and in the sea wherever they looked. Rowland later found that the amount of CFC produced was equal to what was in the atmosphere. The main problem with CFCs is that it has a half life of up to 150 years. This caused everyone to be concerned because CFCs are present in household items and had everyday uses.

Another form of an environmental problem is of global warming. This is dangerous because it has to ability to change climates and raise temperatures over time. Scientists are worried about this happening because industrial activities around the world are releasing
