Still using our parallel of spending without using paper, we must examine the banking process with regards to credit cards. A bank issues a credit card such as Visa or MasterCard to the purchaser. Bank also sets up accounts for the merchant. When the card is used the merchant swipes the card thru a reader and the account information and amount of transaction is sent to the acquiring bank. Then the money is taken from the purchaser’s bank and placed into the merchants account. Statistically 75% of our population has credit cards with the average purchaser carrying fourteen cards. Eighty eight percent of these people use their credit cards online. Shopping has been made easier with the use of plastic. This is similar to the paperless society because the use of computers and telephone transfer of digital information has greatly reduced the need for paper. “In this automated, computerized age, it really doesn’t make sense to keep hard copies of files when computers can store them more safely and conveniently. Paper documents are electronically stored on electronic files retrieved within minutes from an underground secure Internet Web server.”
