The author states that when a killer is leaving a signature he does not change the patterns in signature but the MO does. The operation of committing murders may vary in geographic region, target, race or anything that generally describes the killers way of hunting and stalking its prey the signature however is always constant even if the killer clearly tries to make it untraceable. Unnoticeably, the killer leaves the mark the same way it was left in previous murders. This provides a more accurate picture for investigators of what they are dealing with and the process of establishing a good profile.

The author touches on every aspect of the signature killer from MO to their calling card and the emotional state they are in when they are performing the ritual kill. The facts exemplified by Keppel show the killer is not human and is totally out of touch with himself and reality. He only knows of one thing and that is killing for pure enjoyment. These sexual offenders reach their climax through gore and the pleasure of torture and abuse. This may be evidence of a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Keppel has provided nothing but facts and examples to help make his book more intriguing and be a tool to those who study the mind of a killer. There is nothing negative to comment on about the book except he is very repetitious in his writing. I noticed that he really touches more on the mind of the signature killer in his present existent but what his childhood was like. The book describes some childhood occurrences but doesn’t really emphasize as much as it should be addressed. I think as a child and teen those are the years you develop your own morals views on life. There could be clues about a killer from knowing their past. For example, the child could have attended an all boy’s catholic school and developed a sense of homophobia which later in life made him kill gay young men, or they could have been molested and as a form of retaliation went on a killing spree.

The discovery of a signature is revealed by something unusual about the crime scene but the killer goes out of his way in preparation for his remaining mark. Keppel says that the sites seem to be so meticulous even after a brutal act has occurred. The killer takes time in planning his kill, the position of the body, and how he can perform his ritual without leaving any evidence.

Signature or “calling card” of a killer is usually something rare that appears in a crime seen. It is something that appears unusual and is repeated in a future crime. This is what makes a murder different from one another. For example, in the South Park Marina murder a woman beaten, strangled and raped was left in a position on her back with her legs spread open showing her vagina. The killer performed another murder of Iantha Buchanan who was also found in a position with her legs spread open but on her backside.
