James Dickey

James Dickey was a famous American poet who wrote poetry during the first half of the 20th century. Serving in World War II and the loss of a older brother when he was a child impacted his life. His life experiences influenced his style of writing.

James Lafayette Dickey III was born in Atlanta, Georgia on February 2, 1923. He was the third child of Maibelle Swift Dickey and Eugene Dickey. He was named after his grandfather and his uncle. Their first child, a daughter named Mailbelle Swift Dickey who was followed by a son, Eugene Jr. Eugene Jr. died before he reached the age of seven. They had a fourth child, another son, Thomas Swift Dickey.

James grew up in Atlanta and attended North Fulton High School. After graduating from North Fulton he went to Darlington School in Rome, Georgia for one year in preparation for a college education at the University of Clemson, South Carolina. In 1942, James dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army Air Corps to serve in World War II.

James then entered flight training school. He became a radar observer and navigator, doing this he flew thirty-nine missions in the 418th Night Fighter Squadron base in the South Pacific.

The Air Force recalled Dickey to train officers for the Korean War. He continued teaching after his discharge from the Korean conflict, he then returned to Rice. During this period he worked continuously in his notebooks. He fully documented his development as a poet and critic.
