A Doll House
The Patriarchal Marriage Of Nora And Helmer! From the beginning of time until about the 1970’s women were expected to be seen and not heard. In A Doll House, Nora and Helmer’s marriage reflected this typed of thinking. Nora and Helmer’s relationship was built on the idea of the man goes to work and makes all the household decisions and the woman takes care of the children and the house. They were part of a patriarchal society, were according to Webster’s New World Dictionary is a form of social organization in which the father or the eldest male is recognized as the head of the family or tribe. Also it means government, rule, or domination by men as far as the family or tribe. Women had to secretly do things without their husband’s permission. I think that this made the women feel important, or that they could do things by themselves. If the truth ever came out it could ruin the relationship between husband and wife, it make s the man feel less of a man when his wife doesn’t come to him for everything. Women were considered to be possessions of their husbands, Helmer sees Nora as his possession or maybe even a child. He always makes sure to say “my” when calling her “ Is that my little lark twittering out
I feel like Helmer is in lust with his wife, he has this type of fairy tale love for her. He believes he is her knight in shining Armour. Because he has rescued, and cared her, she is expected to be in his debt. Never going behind his back to do anything he feel unpleasing. When a woman goes out and does things that they are not supposed to do they were supposed to be punished. Helmer tries to punish Nora after he finds out that she takes out the loan. Nora has since discovered herself and tells him “I have to stand completely alone, if I’m ever going to discover myself and this world out there. She has been liberated for the entrapment set before her by her husband. In some way I feel that Nora likes the fact the Helmer treats her like a child, she plays right into the traditional role, sometimes she is eggs him on. She tells him “Yes, take care of me, Torvald, please! Promise me that?”(1031). It seems that Nora really wants to be a good wife and obey her husband, by letting him know that she needs him. She is reassuring him of his manhood and the fact that she would have nothing if it weren’t for him. Women didn’t really work back then, and the work that they did do wouldn’t take care of a household. They made clothes and did nettle work, and Nora wrote letters for people to make some extra money. I believe that is why today’s men feel like they have control over their women and that they are supposed to make the bacon so to speak. Even though women can go out now and get the same jobs as men, and the men are not willing to take care of the household like they did back then. Things have definitely change since then women are no longer an extension of their husbands, they have a mind of their own and wi
