In the short story, the color black is symbolic for death, as well as depression and gloom. Death is very prevalent in this story through the deaths of Miss Emily’s father, Homer Barron, and herself at the end. The Negro servant in the story plays the role of death because he symbolizes what death has come in the story. Miss Emily used the servant to take her to get the arsenic in which she used to kill Homer Barron. The Negro also resembles death because he is the one that knew about the death of Homer Barron and he carried out tasks for Miss Emily. The servant didn’t have anything, but Miss Emily and he was her death, he waited until she died before he left. The servant had nothing of a better role than to play the death in the story since he was surrounded by it being the help of Miss Emily and living in the old house with her.
