Legalizing Marijuana

Marijuana is first and foremost a hazardous and illegal drug. It is not a drug that should be legalized. Although marijuana can be used to aid the pain of glaucoma, cancer, AIDS and many other terminal illnesses, it is not a proven fact that it is beneficial and good for a person’s health (Hart 101).  Marijuana has proven to affect a person’s memory, judgment, perception, and body. Marijuana cigarettes have often been compared to that of regular cigarettes and are classified as being poor for your health. Many advocates for the legalization of marijuana, or weed, believe that it is beneficial to a patient that is suffering from a painful and terminal illness (Hart 200).

Marijuana can affect a person’s memory, judgment, and perception. This drug enables a person to function both mentally and physically. The inhalation of this drug immediately goes to the brain. By doing this it can interfere with ones normal functions, physical feelings, and emotions (Goodykoontz 15). Some users get bad effects from the usage of this drug. They may suffer sudden feelings of anxiety and have paranoid thoughts. Because this drug can affect memory, users may forget things that they may have done or things they are supposed to do. A marijuana cigarette, joint, or just the smoke of marijuana can affect the body. “The smoke of a marijuana cigarette contains, in its gas phase, the harmful vapors of carbon monoxide, acetaldehyde, acrolein, toluene, nitrosamine and vinyl chloride, and its particulate phase phenol, creosol, methyl and naphthalene (Williams 50).”  Including all of this, marijuana cigarettes contain twice as many cancer producing substances in its smoke than regular cigarettes. People who smoke marijuana inhale harder and much deeper than those who smoke regular cigarettes.

The opposing view understands that there are many other drugs available. Researchers state, however, that some patients cannot take any drugs that contain Marinol that must be swallowed. In such cases, patients may drop out of life saving chemotherapy. Researchers also say that people suffering from these terminal illnesses will risk the problems of marijuana. Advocates note that marijuana cigarettes are more effective than the government applied pills. They add that inhaling the marijuana smoke delivers a

chemotherapy (Espejo 30).” There are many other medications that physicians can offer a person suffering from a terminal illness to feel comfort and ease (Cassel 125).

It is also believed that the push to legalize marijuana for medical purposes will lead to a greater acceptance of it as a recreational drug. Marijuana is a gateway t
