For the first time in this century, world marine fish catches are declining. To fisheries experts, recent declines are a warning that current levels of exploitation have exceeded the productive limits of many of the world’s marine eco-systems. Although a variety of species are severely impacted by fishing, their exploitation can cause irreversible environmental issues as well. In the September 11th, 2003 issue, of Nature magazine, it concludes that over fishing is a primary cause of eco-system destruction.

Over fishing is a worldwide issue that needs to be addressed immediately, both through international regulation, and individual action. Today we have looked at the problem associated with over fishing, why it is happening, and what can be done to help see it come to an end. For the past decade fish populations have been on a steep decline. Fish play a vital role in human consumption, and need to be preserved, before it is to late.

In an article “sinking fast” at www.greenpeace.org it states that overall, the worlds fishing fleets receive direct or indirect government support in excess of $50 billion dollars every year. In the United States alone, 1.6 billion dollars in government and private investment was used to build up the domestic factory trawler fleet to fish Alaskan waters. By 1990 Japan had extended an estimated 19 billion dollars worth of credit to its already overbuilt commercial fleet. Continued enhancement of fishing methods has also had a great affect on fish populations. In the book The Empty Ocean, by Richard Ellis the author implies that fishing methods have vastly improved over the years. By the late 1950’s mass production of the factory trawler began to take place. With the introduction of these huge fishing vessels, boat size increased, along with horsepower, the extent of a boats range, and the capacity of the nets they use to harvest fish. The introduction of these trawlers allows companies to catch, process, and freeze fish at sea, giving them unrivaled fishing power and capability. Over fishing is a worldwide problem that continues to intensify on a daily basis. If people continue to stand by and do nothing, all of the oceans wonderful resources will soon be depleted.
