Chapter 16 Psychological Disorders Depression

The topic of depression is of special interest to me for a number of reasons. Depression is very common in today’s society and is a very fascinating psychological condition. Also many some of my friends and family members show signs of depression. After reading the textbook and doing some online research, I have come to conclude that my brother has a form of depression called Dysthmia. I have concluded this due to the appearance of some of the symptoms that I have observed in my brother. My brother has a mild form of depression and has feelings of hopelessness and fatigue. The cause of his condition is still unknown to me. But I have formed hypotheses that could explain the cause of the condition. It is known that most of depression has deep genetic roots. The notion of being genetically disposed to being depressed is known. (1). Doing a little bit of research I found out that none of my parents or grandparents were depressed neither am I or any of my other siblings. So the genetic factor being at play in the cause has to be ruled out. The other factor that I suspect as being a factor in the prevalence of the condition is the fact that my brother has experienced a lot of learned he


lpless. Learned help nesses is when a person experiences failure after failure at a certain task that eventually he gives up trying. Learned helpnesses has been researched and has been associated with depression (2). I believe that my brother acquired the learned helpnesses when my parents indirectly forced my brother to attend Wayne State University and do the pre-medical curriculum. My parents are determined that we all grow up to be professionals in the medical field and make them proud. My brother had a hard time making the transition from High School to a large scale university and didn’t do as good as he should of. This led my brother to feel hopeless and eventually after all the failures he just stopped caring about school. My brother just decided to get a biology bachelors degree instead and do lab work supervising instead of going to medical school. I think that the problem is still present in the subject for a number of reasons. The first of these reasons is that my brother still has a negative outlook on life. He feels that since he was expected to do so much and failed to do so he at school he will fail to do so on other things as well. Also my brother denies he has any problems and thinks that he perfectly normal, which for the most part he is. This outlook on life as being global and stable is probably the reason why my brother still has this condition. The fact that my brother denies he has a condition is also a cause of why the condition is still present. If a person does not acknowledge a condition, he will never work on doing anything to help himself out.Possible treatment options in my opinion would involve different approaches and methodologies. You must first make the person acknowledge his condition. This can be done most like by comparing him to a typical 23 year old in terms of behavior and educating him of the condition. Informing the patient of his condition can help significantly, because he will be better able to cope with it. I would improvise a psychoanalysis strategy to figure out the exact underlying conflict that has made this condition prevalent. Then I will make the patient understand that it is not his fault that he failed he was forced to do it, and attempt to give the patient a positive outlook on the future. Next I could improvise a more medical approach by giving anti-depressant medications to help stabilize the mood.Chapter 9 :Intelligence and CreativityDistribution of IQ scores and Giftedness“ How smart are you?” this is a very common concept that crosses my path day in and day out, especially in a University setting. That is why I have an interest in the topic. I want to know what is intelligence and what makes some people more intelligent than others. Also I was curious on how smart I am compared to the average person. Intelligence can be measured by an IQ test such as the WISC test, which measures intelligence on verbal and performance levels (1). So I took an IQ test and scored a 128 on it. I believe that I am smarter than an average person, I believe this because on an IQ test I scored a 128, which can be interpreted as being super intelligent according to notes given in class. I believe that I am quite intelligent for a number of reasons. I achieve good grades in school, which is a sign on IQ, but I also do this under stressful conditions. I believe that I have very good fluid intelligence, which is intelligence that “involves short-term memory, abstract thinking, creativity, and reaction time; tends and to decline with age” (3). I think for one to be considered intelligent he should have a high IQ score as well as a high EQ score. EQ is known as emotional intelligence, and involves social skill
