Life, Music And The Pursuit Of Happiness

Life, Music and the Pursuit of Happiness

Life, Music, and the Pursuit of Happiness

“Are you a faggot?” the boy said. I tried to ignore him, pretend like I didn’t hear him, but I couldn’t. “Leave me alone” I said. “You didn’t answer my question,” the boy said, “Are you a faggot?” I ignored him by looking out the window, trying to pretend I was anywhere but on that bus. Why couldn’t he just leave me alone? “Huh? Are you a faggot?” the boy said as he slapped my neck. The sun shined on my face while tears filled my eyes as I again tried to ignore him. Why me? I asked myself, what did I do to deserve this? Finally after numerous slaps to the neck my stop came. I tried to get off the bus as quickly as possible so no one would know I’d been crying. The last thing I wanted was for them to see that they got to me.

After getting off the bus I walked slowly up my drive way to the door. The feeling of hurt and pain engulfed my body. Was I that odd? Was I that different that someone had to ridicule me for it? I got my key, opened the door and came in. No one was home. As I shut the door I could finally let out what I had been feeling. I slid down

Even to this day, 12 years later, I go to music for comfort, and just like the kid on the bus, music is still like a friend. I found my love and passion for music long ago. At first it was there for me because I was down, but now it is there because I love it. I have always been the singer in my family, always the showman. It never occurred to me until I needed music the most, how powerful music can be in someone’s life. My life is living proof of that. I could not tell you why music makes me feel the way it does, but it does. When I sing I feel at ease, I lose myself in the music and my soul shines through. It is one of the best feelings in the world. “The feeling is indescribable, when you love something, and your so passionate about something, there is no other choice but to pursue that,” said University of Missouri – Kansas City conservatory student, Paul Thomas.

From very early on I knew I wanted to have a career in music. With that, I always dreamed I would go to college as well. Life as a music major can be inspiring and challenging, thrilling and exhausting, but it’s anything but an easy choice of study. In fact, I believe music may be one of the most challenging majors out there. In spite of all the fun I had with music throughout high school, reality came as quite a shock once I got to college. “I feel like I sometimes I have lost that passion and fun for music, said Tanna Ward. A music student is not all that people think. We don’t just sing or play our instruments all day. There is music history, music theory, form and analysis,

Just like everyday after school, I went to my room, turned on the radio and lay down. The music helps me feel better. I love to sing along with the radio; sometimes I even pretend I’m famous. I get a costume out of whatever I can find and pretend I’m some famous rock star. I even have a dance routine to my favorite songs. Whenever I get down about myself I listen to music. It has always been there like a friend that cheers me up.

Every music person has their own story of how they began to love music. “Music has been the main subject of everything in my family. My dad is a high school vocal director, and my mom is the accompanist for the high school. Both of them have music degrees and my sister is in college right now getting hers. The minute I was born I was surrounded by music. Music is just in my blood,” said
